Weetbix Slice - a recipe

I'm usually sharing skincare recipes, but this time it's food -  a recipe for Weetbix Slice. I hadn't made this for quite a while, but after a swarm of locusts (aka teenagers) raided the cupboards it was time to do some baking.

Weetbix Slice


Ingredients:

  • 175g melted butter
  • 4 crushed weetbix
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup dessicated coconut
  • 1 dessertspoon cocoa

Heat the oven to 180C (350F)

Combine all the ingredients and press into a lined slice pan. The one I use is 27cm x 21cm. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Cool in the pan.

When cold ice with chocolate icing and sprinkle with a little coconut.






This is another one of those recipes jammed into my overstuffed recipe book. It's handwritten (in my handwriting), but I have no idea where I got it from. I've been making it for years.

There are a few versions of this recipe around, but if anyone knows the origins of this particular one I'd love to know.

Milky Oatmeal Scrub

This is a very gentle scrub which will leave your skin smooth and soft. It's so gentle that you can use it as a facial mask.

Milky Oatmeal Scrub


To make this you will need:

1/2 cup milk powder
1/2 cup finely ground oatmeal
water

Blend the dry ingredients thoroughly. Pour into an airtight storage container. 

When you're ready to use that scrub combine 2 teaspoons of water and 2 teaspoons of the the milk-oat mix to form a paste. You may need to adjust the quantities to get a smooth, spreadable mix that isn't too runny or too thick. Allow the mixture to sit for a minute or two before using.

To use as a facial scrub massage gently into your face and neck, then rinse with warm water.

To use as a mask apply to your face and throat (avoiding the eyes). Leave for 20 minutes then rinse off.





Stored in an airtight container the dry ingredients will last for up to 6 months. Any of the wet mixture left over should be discarded.

Lemon Exfoliating Scrub

Today I'm sharing a recipe for a great lemon-scented exfoliating scrub which you can use in the shower.

To make this you will need:

  • 1 cup sea salt or epsom salt. (if using sea salt a medium grind works best)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (in cold temperatures you will need to soften this)
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

Combine the salt and coconut oil in a glass or ceramic bowl using a large spoon or (if the oil is quite soft) you could use a whisk. Add the essential oil a couple of drops at a time mixing thoroughly after each addition. Spoon into a clean lidded glass jar.

To use scoop out and rub into your skin concentrating on knees, elbows and heels. Rinse well and follow with a good moisturiser.






The salt in this scrub acts to soften and smooth skin by removing dead cells. The coconut oil hydrates, moisturises and nourishes the skin.

Sweet orange essential oil can be used in place of lemon. A few dry and crushed peppermint leaves could also be added. 

For a gentler option use 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup sugar.

Five more ways to use Coconut Oil

A couple of months ago I wrote about some of the many uses for coconut oil. Here are a few more:


1. Conditioner

Coconut oil can be used as a deep conditioning scalp treatment or on the ends of hair to help prevent splitting.

2. Cold Sores

Studies have shown that lauric acid found in coconut oil may help prevent the reproduction of the cold sore virus. Coconut oil can be applied to cold sores several times a day.

3. Wood Polish

Coconut oil can be used as a substitute for more traditional wood polish oils. It doesn't leave the wood with the same shine as some oils, but I was pleased with the result when I tried it.

4. Lowering Cholesterol

Taking 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil daily may aid in lowering cholesterol. High density lipoproteins, which naturally lower cholesterol, can be boosted by lauric acid found in coconut oil.

5. In Baking

Coconut oil can be used as a substitute for butter or oil when baking. There are some interesting recipes using coconut oil here.
